Frequently Asked Design Questions:

Does McIntosh & Tuttle Cabinetmakers offer design services?

Yes, we have an in-house design department and can offer complete design services for your project.

How does the design process typically work?

Much of our custom woodwork is contracted to builders. In this case, a basic design for architectural millwork or custom cabinetry already exists and is provided by the homeowner's designer or architect. A first meeting might only include a look at the plans to establish the scope of the work, followed by an estimate of the cost involved.

If you are a homeowner and you are considering hiring us to do the design work we will first discuss with you the scope of the project, layout and styling preferences, and time line and budget expectations. If we think that your time line or your budget is unrealistic, or if we think the budget allows for upgrades, we will let you know. It is helpful for this meeting to bring examples from magazines, and any conceptual sketches you may have for architectural millwork, furniture, or cabinet design.

Based on this information we will come up with an estimated cost for the design process. When we present this design estimate we will explain the collaborative aspect of design and how you can influence both the design costs and your ultimate satisfaction with the finished product. If you agree to have us proceed based on the design estimate, we will then schedule the design work. Typically, the design contract provides for an initial set of drawings and two sets of revisions. Further changes to the design will be gladly accomodated but will be billed on a time and materials basis. We will use your budget, styling preferences, and functional requirements to guide the design process to try to achieve all of your goals. The final design becomes your property when completed and paid for, and you may therefore use it to solicit pricing from other cabinetmakers as well as from McIntosh & Tuttle Cabinetmakers..

When the design is completed and approved we will produce a fixed cost for the fabrication of your woodwork. If you wish us to also do the installation, we will provide you with an estimated cost for that as well. Since we do not fully control the conditions for installation we rarely provide a fixed cost.

What will I receive at the end of the design process?

You will receive a plan view of the project as well as elevations of all the woodwork involved. Included in this will be all required details and cross-sections. 3-D drawings, either rendered or unrendered, can also be provided in the design contract if desired. Contained in the drawings will be all dimensions, door and drawer styles and placements, appliance placements, and placements of any accessories. Finally, we will provide you with a fixed cost for the fabrication of your woodwork based on the contents of the approved design.
